UkeHut Anniversary Party

Friday, October 31, 7:30 PM

So is the Ukehut 11 years old or 12 years old? This question arises because Halloween is our anniversary. We had an opening night party on Halloween at which we awarded a prize/ukulele to the best Costume of the night. It was decided that Amelia had the best costume. She was only 4 years old, but her father redesigned her stroller to look like an early model airplane, à la Amelia Erhart. Wings so wide they could only fit through the door on the tilt and a pilot’s hat with sunglasses, she had no competition for the best costume.

There was a full line-up of talented performers, headlined by our own Sakai, who instituted his Saturday night residency concerts and he is still going strong at here amazing shows. Each Saturday, he invites different artist to join him and he presents an extraordinary range of styles from jazz to Bossa Nova to J-pop to classic rock! No genre escapes his scrutiny!

In announcing our party for this year, Sakai suggested that it is our eleventh anniversary, which seemed likely, since Ukehut was born when the New York Ukulele Festival ended. The last Festival was in 2013, so if we opened Ukehut in 2014, this would be our eleventh anniversary. Most of us were content with this designation until Kyoko San started to clean up the old files and found our original lease on the store signed on March 1, 2014. If we already took possession of the store by March, 2014, we must have opened in October of 2013! This is feasible, because we always did the Festival in Springtime, so if we had an April Festival, we could have opened the store at the end of October, don’t you think?

Clearly this is an unresolved question. Please join us on Friday, October 31 to celebrate another stellar year of Ukehut.
